More on CSPop

A while ago I mentioned cspop, a 3D populus clone. Whilst the game itself hasn't yet gotten a website - the author is waiting until it's playable before really marketing it - there has been progress:

CSPop

Work is still going on on the project, it is quite advanced already, but still some work on ui and some finishes on logic are needed to consider it playable.

Anyway I have a couple of EXCLUSIVE screenshots - to be seen nowhere else on the web. (Oh yeah, I make blogging sound more like magazine writing every day!) This is a very exciting looking project and I'm hopeful that it'll be "out there" sooner rather than later.

The daring can grab it from SVN. You'll need Crystal Space and CEL too. :-)

Speaking of exciting projects linked to Crystal Space, there's more details on Project Apricot following a CS conference last month. Project Apricot is going to be a high profile effort to create an open source game using Blender and Crystal Space.

Pingus revival efforts seem to have made some headway but there's still a few tasks left to do before it gets "re-released" as a more manageable project i.e. no new features yet but [supposedly] more maintainable code so less chance of it stagnating again and a greater likelihood of new features / levels in the future.

Something like that. ;-)

Project Apricot: One needs to mention ybout this project that the resultiing game might become "yet another game of type xxx".

But the main goal of the project is not to create a game but to make work for game-creators easier (by improving blender & CS workflow and tools).

The game itself is a nice side-effect though :)

It's Populous not "populus". I'm going to sound like a grammar nazi but you often make grammatical errors in your posts. You should pay more attention to that.It kills your credibility.

Love your blog. :)

Hey Charlie, great log you have there :)

It would be great if you could do a special about guys like this one at some point:
http://myworld.ebay.com/mareszah_17/

Selling free games and other free software on ebay (direct download).

Woohoo Popolus was the ultimate game :) heh i remember that nights spend on it playing, on amiga...
People who sell free-software games should get kick in the balls right!

gray, if you mean Free softwares, than I don't condemn their action.

In fact, I encourage selling games. I see their action as honest, even if it is shrewd. If they lie, than they cross the line.

If people illegally sell freewares, than it is highly unethical.

At least the guy in the link above does no even mention that the software he sells is Free Software, what license it is under, where they can get it originally (including source), etc...

In short - he is screwing the buyers/bidders and violating the terms of the license (not all of them require all or part of the above actions - but most) of some of the software he sells. period. :(

About the selling of free software. Report him to ebay and ask the authors of the free software if they gave permission.

It doesn't matter what license their software is under because they hold the rights to the source code.

We can bitch about it as much as we want, but the GPL indeed does allow other people to sell copies of the software (provided that you don't modify the license and distribute the source code, too, yadayada). People who contribute to a GPL'd project have to know about this.

andrew: the author already give permission to sell via the license!

I am an author myself! I don't care if you sell my work. As far as I am concerned, you're doing me a favor by spreading the software's popularity.

Anybody who written GPLed code must understand and live with it! If not, you shouldn't be writing Free software in the first place!

You don't get truly get Free softwares if you can't live with the fact that somebody can make a lot of money selling your softwares.

It is in the spirit of Free software TO BE ABLE to sell softwares. That is the freedom to give copies to your neighbor!

for me its just cheating other people, selling them software by ebay that is free to dl... that mareszach-lame don't eveen mention that you can dl it for free.. Sry for writing that but for me authors who allow that are suckers...

gray: how is it cheating?

The buyer get what he want, the author benefit from another player, the dude make money. Everyone win.

(Beside not following the rules of the GPL, in which the authors and buyers lose)

The authors are not suckers. They know what they're doing.

Beside kicking people's ball just because they sell Free softwares is actually doing a diservice to the Free software movement.

WEll selled free sotfware isnt' free software.. you know what means word "free" don't you?

gray: Free softwares as in free speech, not price.

Free softwares in that sense, is not freeware.
